What is Archaeology?

Archaeology is one of the four sub-fields of anthropology. Archaeologist study human cultures through recovery and analysis of material remains called artifacts. Archaeologist also study the environmental data of the site where the remains were found. Some types of artifacts that archaeologist find are: Tools, pottery, jewelry, hearths, human bones, animal bones and housing structures. These are some examples. The findings can be endless. Archaeologist usually study "prehistoric" sites and cultures. Prehistoric does not mean savage. Prehistoric simply means that there is no written record for that time period. Studying archaeology is important in order to preserve the past. If we did not study archaeology the past would be lost. There are many types of archaeology: Underwater, biological, ethno, classical, historical, urban etc...
Archaeologist have a wide range of job opportunities. Cultural Resource Management, fieldwork, academic are just to name a few. Archaeologist must adhere to a set of principals. A team of underwater archaeologist diving in East Caicos Island, uncovered the sunken slave ship Trouvadore. In 1841 the island had outlawed slavery. Finding the ship will provide locals with a part of their history.
